Divergent Inspired Look – Dauntless

Divergent Inspired Look - Dauntless

We’ve finally gotten to the fifth and final faction in my Divergent Inspired Look series: Dauntless. Dauntless is the faction that values courage and bravery, and it plays a pivotal role in the Divergent series. Dauntless is the faction that Tris chooses, and it is where she forms (and discovers) her true identity as a Divergent.

In the novel, the Dauntless are described as wearing black clothes with tattoos and piercings. They are often seen doing a range of fearless feats, such as jumping from staggering heights or onto moving trains. I wanted to incorporate that toughness into this look, while still keeping the look sleek and modern. When I think Dauntless, what comes to mind are edgy pieces and tough fabrics with a lot of hardware detailing. To start, pair some high-waisted black skinny jeans with a loose-fitting charcoal crop top for a trendy twist. Add some pieces that are distinctly Dauntless, such as black lace-up combat boots and a black leather jacket with silver hardware details. Finish off with some edgy accessories that have a hint of glam, such as a pewter clutch, silver stud earrings (the floral shape add an unexpected touch of femininity), and lots of rings. I particularly like the spiked midi ring and cut-out bar ring–they have a tough, edgy feel and add a bit of shine to the look. Brush a few coats of nail polish in a gunmetal gray color to finish off a tough, yet chic, Dauntless look.

Divergent Inspired Look – Candor

Divergent Inspired Look - Candor
Here is the second of five looks based on the five factions in the Divergent series by Veronica Roth: Abnegation, Erudite, Candor, Amity, and Dauntless. This look was inspired by the Candor faction. The Candor faction values honesty, and the people in this faction wear only black and white, because they believe that the truth is either black and white. Like my previous look for Erudite, this look adds a chic, modern twist to Divergent-inspired fashion. For this look, I wanted to play around with texture and structure to add some variety to the black and white. I  also picked shapes and structures that reflected the Candor values–the Candor faction is very straightforward, so I created this look with smooth, clean lines in mind. I chose simple, structured silhouettes, such as the blazer and rectangular clutch, to reflect the Candors’ straightforwardness.  Black leather leggings add some interest to the look and make it trendy and edgy. To further reflect the Candors’ honest, direct attitudes, I added some simple, yet sophisticated, black stilettos, and jewelry pieces in clean shapes and styles. While I don’t know if the Candors in the books wore diamonds, crystals, or onyx, their stunning simplicity make them a perfect choice of accessory for the honest, outspoken Candor.

Divergent Inspired Look – Erudite

Divergent Inspired Look - Erudite
I love the Divergent series by Veronica Roth, and I’ve been seeing lots of fashion blogs (or Pinterest users) posting their own takes on Divergent-inspired fashion. It’s so interesting to see how different people with different styles interpret and create looks based on their favorite books, especially one like Divergent, which is based in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world. Since I began reading the Divergent series, I’ve been fascinated by the different factions, as well as the details that go into defining them. I’ve definitely identified with (the good aspects!) of the Erudite faction, so here’s the first of five posts on Divergent-inspired looks. For my own personal twist on Divergent-inspired fashion, I decided to add a bit of a chic, sophisticated, modern flare (I’m not quite ready to venture out and try a futuristic look just yet). The colors are signature of the Erudite faction, yet it’s a look that’s wearable and versatile. Classic pieces such as an A-line dress and a leather clutch with gold hardware detail reflect the cultivated nature of the Erudite faction, but pieces such as black tights, suede black ankle boots, and a tan leather jacket give the look some edge. Jewelry details can also add subtle nods to the Erudite faction–in this look, the bird on the gold midi ring resembles an eagle, considered by many to be a symbol of perspicacity. The key pendant could also symbolize the unlocking of new ideas, as the Erudites are known to do.
